Board Game

Board Game Review – “Carcassonne” – German game that won the German Game Award (2001) with a good balance of luck and strategy

This is an introduction to the board game “Carcassonne”. I hope it will be useful for those who are considering buying it.

基本情報

Objective of the game / End

You can earn points for each city, road, or monastery you complete by placing the tiles you draw and your panels (meeple). The game ends when all the tiles have been placed on the field, and the player with the most points at the end wins.

Time required: 35 minutes

Number of players: 2 to 5

It is recommended to play with five people; three or four people can be fun, but with two people, there are fewer surprises and the game tends to be a serious game of strategy.

Conclusion: Very happy with my purchase.

Easy game flow

 Step1 → Step2 → Step3

What you do each turn is very simple.
Step 1: Draw a tile from the face-down tile pile.
Step 2: Place a tile on the tile (map) on the field.
Step 3: Place and collect people as needed.

That’s it. This is a good game for beginners as there are basically no optional actions, and it is also a good game to play while drinking or talking.

Easy to carry

Box Box open Contents only

The size of the box is 190 x 275 x 65 mm. It is a cumbersome size to carry the box as it is. However, since the minimum required items are only tiles and frames, they can be transferred from the box to a small bag or drawstring and taken out.
The scoring board can be substituted with paper and pen. (You will lose a little of the game’s world view, though.
You can also take it to a friend’s house or on a trip and enjoy it.

A good balance of luck and strategy

This is the best way to go.

Luck
-Draw tiles randomly
-Depends on other players’ moves

Strategy
-Where to place the tiles
-How and when to place and retrieve the meeples

I think this balance between luck and strategy is very good. I also like that there are not too many options for strategy.

A family of three can do it.

We have a husband, wife, and son (8 years old at the time of purchase), and the three of us were able to enjoy it together as a family and it was in heavy rotation for a while.

Design

This is a German game. The game has a unique and stylish look.
-The frames (meeple) are made of wood and have a warm feeling.
-The pictures on the tiles have a nice hand-drawn feel to them.

(In addition) We actually went to Carcassonne.

It is an actual city in France and a world heritage site. I took the chance to visit it while I was in Europe. I was impressed by how faithfully the world of Carcassonne was reflected in the game. In fact, the grandeur of the entire citadel seen from the outside and the part of French history felt inside are worth visiting even if you don’t know the game.
